Shearer says Gunners were lost against City

Most observers expected Arsenal to get hammered by Manchester City on Sunday but in all fairness, they did not play too badly. Everybody else that has played at the Etihad Stadium has got destroyed.

The Gunners had City on the rack at one stage when Alexandre Lacazette pulled a goal back to get it to 2-1. Eventually as we know, City ran out 3-1 winners but it was a contest.

Danny Welbeck is not a natural goalscorer – Crooks

BBC Pundit Garth Crooks does not regard Danny Welbeck to be a natural goal-scorer despite his impressive start to the season with Arsenal.

The England international has notched three goals in the Premier League this term – including a man of the match brace in the 3-0 win over Bournemouth.

Despite this, Cooks is critical about the former Manchester United man who he feels cannot be compared with club legends Thierry Henry and Ian Wright, he said: “The number of times I have seen Welbeck score goals that aren’t clean connections makes me wonder, is he what you would call ‘a genuine finisher’ in the same way you would categorise other Arsenal forwards like Ian Wright, Dennis Bergkamp or Thierry Henry? Not in my opinion.”

Welbeck has struggled with a series of knee injuries in his short Arsenal career, but he has nevertheless bagged 17 goals in 69 games for the north London giants. Time and time again, the Englishman has missed glorious opportunities to score, and Crooks insists that the likes of Henry, Bergkamp and Wright would not have let that happen, he added: “The difference is that I’ve seen Wright, Bergkamp and Henry all score goals like the one Welbeck went for and missed with remarkable regularity.” (more…)

Arsene Wenger delivers transfer update following Stoke City defeat

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has insisted that he will not change his transfer plans for the summer following a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Stoke City.

The Gunners commanded the game with more than 77 percent possession, but they failed to find the cutting edge on the day. The Gunners have brought in just two players in Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette during this summer’s transfer window while their pursuit of Monaco’s Thomas Lemar appears to have reached a standstill.

With just 10 days left in the transfer window, teams from across the Premier League are looking to reinforce their respective squads, but Wenger appears content with the options in hand. The long-standing manager insists that he is focused on reducing the overall numbers in his first-team squad as it is already unmanageably big. (more…)

Arsene Wenger privately admits defeat in pursuit of Kylian Mbappe

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger appears to have told his close confidants that the club could miss out on signing top target Kylian Mbappe during this summer’s transfer window.

The Gunners are looking to fend off interest from Real Madrid and Manchester City as they look to secure the services of the French wonderkid.

Mbappe, 18, bagged 26 goals during his breakthrough spell with the Principality outfit last season, and this has earned him a whole host of admirers with Paris Saint-Germain being the latest to have joined the list. Wenger has been confident of luring Mbappe to the Emirates in recent weeks due to the player’s childhood love for Arsenal, but he is now said to be pessimistic about the Gunners prospects, according to Get French Football.

A tweet from the source read: “Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger is privately pessimistic about Arsenal’s chances for Kylian Mbappé, according to tomorrow’s L’Équipe.” Wenger made the visit earlier in the week to open up negotiations for Mbappe, but the club look less likely to lodge a bid which could exceed £100m. KROENKE SAYS SHARES NOT FOR SALE

Arsenal majority shareholder Stan Kroenke has said that his shares are not for sale.

The American has 67 percent stake at the North London club. Following recent reports of £1 billion bid by AlisherUsmanov, the company of the American released a statement. The news of the bid circulated widely following the Gunners’ failure to secure a Champions League spot for the first time in 20 years.

KroenkeSports and Entertainment says it remains a “committed, long term investors in Arsenal.” Usmanov owns 30 percent stake but he is not part of the board or does is he involved in decision making.

The Russian earlier said Kroenke should be held responsible for the team’s failures. So his bid was to buy the club and try to turn it around.

Arsenal are set to play league winners Chelsea on Saturday for the FA Cup. They finished fifth so they would be playing in the Europa League next season but the FA Cup would provide some respite for the team.

Coach Arsene Wenger’s contract is set to end this summer. The French manager would likely continue with the club but the statement from Kroenke did not mention anything about Wenger’s future. Wenger admitted that the uncertainty over his future affected the team. (more…)

ARSENAL THRASH WEST HAM 3-0

Arsenal defeated West Ham United 3-0 to boost their hopes of making the top four at the end of the season.

The Gunners seem to have regained confidence after a few threats.

The visitors would be disappointed with the result as it is the first straight loss in the Premier League. United were one of the top teams few months ago but they face relegation concerns this term after a string of poor results.

The game started slowly as the air was tense. After the break, Man of the Match Mesut Ozil got the first goal in his 150th appearance for Arsenal. He was gifted the ball by defender Jose Fonte, which he converted from the edge of the box.

In the absence of Laurent Koscielny, Theo Walcott led the team. Ozil and Alexis Sanchez combined to set up Walcott for the second goal ten minutes after the opener. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked out striker Olivier Giroud who curled home the third of the match in the 83rd minute.

When the goals started pouring in, the Hammers seemed to collapse despite putting up a decent fight in the first half. Michail Antonio and Robert Snodgrass were not potent enough upfront, with only Manuel Lanzini and Edmilson Fernandes getting an attempt at goal when the game was already buried. (more…)

FABREGAS PAYS TRIBUTE TO FORMER CLUB AND COACH

Ahead of Saturday’s London derby clash at Stamford Bridge, former arsenal captain, Cesc Fabregas has payed a heartfelt tribute to his former side (Arsenal FC) and his then coach, Arsene Wenger.

Having joined Arsenal’s Hale End Academy from boyhood club, FC Barcelona, he signed for the London club on 11 September 2003, the midfielder rose through the ranks to become a real fan favorite and club legend before his return to the Los Blancos in 2011.

During his time at the Emirates, he formed a strong tie with both his manager and the fans, but he soon angered many Gunners fans when he agreed to join their local rivals, Chelsea in 2014 where he picked up his maiden premier league title in his first season at the Bridge. (more…)

Mustafi Confident of Arsenal Winning the Title after Burnley Win

Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi managed to score his first goal for the club since his move from Valencia in the summer.

His goal against Burnley helped the gunners take a 1-0 lead in the match before ending up as a 2-1 winners after two dramatic injury time penalties. Burnley received the first of the penalties which appeared to have put a major dent on Arsenal’s title challenge, but a late, late goal from Alexis Sanchez paved way for the gunners moving into the second spot.Mustafiwas signed from Valencia for around £ 34 million in the summer and he has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League this season.

The German international claims that he is aware that table leaders Chelsea have an eight point advantage at the top of the table, but he is confident that the gunners can remain in the hunt for the title and eventually overthrow the London rivals. Arsenal have not won the league title since the 2003-04 season, while they have only managed two runners-up finishes since then.

As the club have finally emerged stronger after construction of the 60,000 seater stadium, they have opened up their wallets in recent transfer windows. Better players are expected to arrive soon, but Mustafi reckons that Arsenal have already shown signs of resilience required to win the title.

“It [the win] is important for us even if you don’t look at the other results. Playing at home to Burnley, you want to take the three points and if you want to stay up there it is something you have to do and that is what we did. As Arsenal you want to go for it and you look in the eyes and see that no-one gives up until the last second and it shows how much belief we have in ourselves and that we are going to go for it,” said Mustafi.

PIRES: OZIL IS NEW DENNIS BERGKAMP

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has hailed Mesut Ozil, likening the German to Gunners ex-playmaker Dennis Bergkamp. Ozil led the club’s players providing assists last term.

In addition, this term he has scored his first hat trick in an impressive goal scoring form. Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has said that the German international could only be compared to the likes of Bergkamp when he signs a new deal with the club. However, Pires, who used to play alongside Bergkamp, opines that Ozil is already an equivalent of Bergkamp in the current set-up.

“Something has clicked. What’s happened in the head is like a click because he’s scored a lot of goals.

“This is a difference between the last season with Mesut Ozil and now because he’s thinking just for himself, and sometimes when you are in front of the target it is very important to score a goal,” Pires told Arsenal official website.

“Mesut has very good qualities, he can normally score a minimum of 12 goals during the Premier League so in my time the maestro was Dennis Bergkamp, and now it is Mesut Ozil. I love them both because they play very good football but they play for the team. Not for himself, they play for the team. This point is very important for the future and of course for Arsenal,” Pires added.

The Mirror reports that Ozil is close to agreeing a new deal with the club that would see him earn £200,000 per week. Representatives of the former Real Madrid star reportedly met with the club’s officials over the international break to refine contract details. The club values Ozil’s contributions and are willing to make him the highest paid player in the club with the new deal. The 28-year old player would see an increase of £60,000 from his current weekly wages at the Emirates.

PIRES: ARSENAL CAN TAKE ON TOTTENHAM

Robert Pires has recently come out to back Arsenal to take down Tottenham in their upcoming derby on Sunday.

The Gunners Legend is of the opinion that Arsenal make for a stronger team than rivals Chelsea and Tottenham.

Also, in what seems like an endorsement, Robert Pires has said that the Emirates stadium dwellers are ‘the best team in London’ and so therefore, there is definitely no reason why they can’t bring back the Premier League title this season to the Emirates Stadium.

Pires was amongst the last Gunners side that took the top-flight crown back during the 2003/04 season and since then, that squad has been known in football folklore as “The Invincibles.’

However, the 2016/17 squad will be unable to match that achievement as they have already lost one match. Yet, they are at present in second position on the table with 15 games unbeaten in all competitions so far. With the team’s high morale and momentum building, Arsenal seems to be in perfect shape for their derby game against North London rivals, the Spurs.

Pires believes in the Arsenal set-up, and has endorsed them to come out victorious. However, he sees this as one sterner test of the Gunners’ title credentials.
