WENGER PLEASED

The manager of Arsenal, Arsene Wenger, is pleased with the way his team recovered from the defeat against Manchester United and put up a solid show against Southampton yesterday.

Arsenal defeated Southampton by 2-0. The result suggests that it was a dominating performance by the Gunners, but, that wasn’t the case. They were given good, tough fight by the Southampton side, but, a couple of individual brilliances from Olivier Giroud, one in each half, helped them to secure 3 points from the game.

It was the 9th victory for the Gunners in the Premier League this season. With this victory, they maintained their first position in the points table. They have got 28 points in the bag at the moment which is 4 more than the no. 2 side Liverpool.

Arsenal had gone into the international break with a bit of a setback as they had been beaten by Manchester United by 0-1 in an away game. But, the way they have come back after the break, it seems they are ready for another good run.

Talking to the reporters in the press conference after the match against Southampton, Wenger said, “Southampton is a fine side and if they had secured 3 points today, they would have equalized with us in terms of points. So, it was important for us to play well and we did that. We made sure that we pounced on the mistakes committed by them. These are vital 3 points for us.”

Meanwhile, with his two goals against Southampton, Olivier Giroud got into top 5 in the list of leading goal scorers in the league this season. He has found the net 7 times for the Gunners so far. The top position in that list is acquired by the Liverpool duo of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

ARSENAL LOSE OUT

Arsenal suffered an opening day 3-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa, which threatened to destroy the whole campaign even before it had started properly. However, the club managed to recover from it quite well and are currently top of the table. They have also managed to bring in German playmaker Mesut Ozil in a £ 42 million deal, which is now a new transfer record for the club. They would have spent even more money had it not been for the failed attempts to bring in the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Luiz Gustavo.

After managing to get the team to the top of the table, Wenger has said that it was extremely crucial that the squad had stability in order to achieve this kind of comeback. Much of the Arsenal team has been constant throughout this run of matches. This has partly been down to the injuries and largely because of the squad strength. Arsenal simply do not have the strength to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester city when it comes to the squad. Midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been a revelation this season, as he has been finally able to demonstrate his quality that was doubted in recent seasons.

“It [stability within the squad] creates a big difference on the confidence level because you know we have done well before with that group, so at least you have a basis. The confidence that basis gives you is of course important. If all starts well then maybe not but where the stability was important I think is with our first shock against Aston Villa. The fact that we could say ‘look guys, we have been together for a while, we know that we have bounced back before, let’s do that again,” said Wenger after the recent win over Sunderland.

ARSENAL LOOK TO SPEND

After years of signing only young players and trying to avoid star names, Arsenal are finally looking to break their policy by showing tremendous interest in the likes of Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez and Gonzalo Higuain. The club were extremely close to signing Higuain before the Argentine ace was signed by Italian club Napoli for around £ 35 million. Arsenal were left extremely disappointed as a result of this missed opportunity to bring in a star name. They made an offer of around £ 25 million for Higuain, which left the opportunity for Napoli to enter into the race.

Arsenal have also been showing interest in Wayne Rooney as well. The Manchester United ace has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, but his astronomical wages could prove to be a problem for Arsenal who have a strict wage structure. Yet again, Wenger has surprised everyone by saying that the club will certainly not have any problems in matching Rooney’s astronomical wages of £ 200,000 per week. Only recently, they made an offer of £ 40 million for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez. Such interest in the top names is a clear sign that Arsenal want to progress according to striker Oliver Giroud.

He scored 17 goals for Arsenal last season and has said that he has no worries about competition for his position.

“We need to show ambition and the offer for Suarez has done that. The club has to show the fans that we mean business. Me and my team-mates, need it as well. It will be a really positive thing if we have a new striker. The whole team is stronger now than it was a year ago. Last season’s new players are all more established. And we’ve lost nobody this summer, which is the first time for Arsenal in maybe four years,” said Giroud.

DUO DESERVE PRAISE

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he is extremely happy that the duo of Laurent Koscielny and Aaron Ramsey have been receiving a lot of praise from Arsenal fans in recent weeks. Arsenal have been one of the inform teams in the division over the last few months. As a result, they have been able to put forward a challenge for the top four positions when it seemed that they were in danger of finishing outside the top four in the first time in 16 seasons. It would have put the club’s future in jeopardy due to the importance of Champions League revenue.

The future of defender Thomas Vermaelen could have easily jeopardised Arsenal’s challenge for a top four spot, but the impressive form of defender Laurent Koscielny has helped them keep several clean sheets in the last few weeks. Koscielny has managed to form an impressive partnership with German international Per Mertesacker. Further, Aaron Ramsey has also been very influential for Arsenal in the absence of Jack Wilshere, who has suffered several recurrence of injury problems in recent weeks.

Arsenal are unbeaten in the last eight league matches, which has put them in a great position to finish in the top four. There are only a few matches left the season.

“Koscielny at the start of the season was not a regular player. Ramsey for a while was not in the team. If you keep going, if you have that stamina and persistence in your attitude, at some stage you will be rewarded. Certainly their outstanding performances have been noticed but as well the quality of their spirit has been rewarded by our fans,” said Arsene Wenger. Ramsey, who has had a lot of stick due to his poor performances, recently managed to win the club’s player of the month award for April.

BELIEVE

The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called on fans to believe in his young players after managing a 2-2 draw with Liverpool during the weekend. This was an extremely important match for Arsenal given that it was at home. They had to come away with three points in order to stay in touch with Tottenham and Everton. Arsenal are currently not in a position to capture the Champions League places for the next season. Under this pressure, Wenger saw his team concede two goals in the match before making a stunning comeback. Luis Suarez opened the scoring for Liverpool after just 6 min before Jordan Henderson doubled the advantage in the 60th minute.

This led to a chorus of disapproval from the Arsenal fans, who were shocked at the display of the Arsenal players. However, the club staged a stunning comeback in the final 30 min of the match. The striker Oliver Giroud pulled one back for Arsenal before the winger Theo Walcott equalised the match 3 minutes later. After the match, Wenger said that he is extremely satisfied with the response of his players to come back from being two goals down. He has also asked for the fans to believe in the players by saying that he expects more from them in the future.

“This squad is top, top level. We have to learn to trust these players again and to keep faith in them. We have signed a bunch of young, English players who have committed to the club for the next four or five years. I think there is a lot to come out of this team, but we have to trust and keep faith with them. Gibbs was an important player for us going forward and the game we want to play. It is a shame he is out for the next three weeks,” said Wenger.

ARSENAL MUST BUY

After struggling to maintain a top four spot in the Premier league during the first half of the season, the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that his team needs bolstering during the January transfer window in order to finish ahead of Tottenham. Wenger has stated on numerous occasions that finishing in the top four is far more important than winning the first trophy for the club since 2005. However, this club look extremely short on quality in order to finish ahead of the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham in the fourth position. The arch rivals Tottenham are already four points ahead of them in the table.

Due to the fact that players like Theo Walcott have been linked with a move away from the club in the summer, Wenger has indicated that he is likely to bring in a few players during January move to strengthen the team. Wenger is no stranger to being players during January with the likes of Andrei Arshavin brought to the club during this period. The team has also sent out Johan Djourou and Marouane Chamakh on a loan deal, which means that their options are limited in both areas of the pitch. Arsenal could only manage a 2-2 draw with Swansea during the weekend in the third round of the FA Cup.

“Abou Diaby’s coming back and if we find one or two on the transfer market, then we can cope with the fixture list. Let’s first keep the players we have and maybe add one or two. We lost Chamakh and Djourou now, so there’s some room. We should have won this game. I felt the first half was a bit locked and one-paced, as much as the second half became much more open,” said Wenger after the match with Swansea.

USE THE HOME ADVANTAGE

The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that his players should utilise the home advantage much better when they take on Swansea at the Emirates stadium this weekend. Arsenal come into this encounter on the back of a poor run of form that has left them five points behind the top four positions. It is no secret that Arsenal have made it a priority to finish in the top four more than winning a trophy. In this situation, Wenger is in desperate demand of a three point return from the weekend’s match against Swansea. Arsenal only managed a 1-1 draw with Everton during the midweek action.

In the meantime, Swansea managed a spectacular 3-1 win over highflying West Brom, which has boosted the confidence of Michael Laudrup’s team. Swansea come into the encounter with real opportunity to overtake Arsenal in the seventh position. The only advantage is that Arsenal have ahead of this match is the home advantage. Wenger has said that it is time the players started utilising this advantage much better. Arsenal have just one victory in the last five matches. This victory came at home in the Champions League against Montpelier. They are undefeated in the last four encounters at home.

“If you look at the Premier League at the moment we have played 14 games, eight away, and now we have played at the two Liverpool clubs and the two Manchester clubs. If we play well at home and get the results at home we have a chance to come back, that is our job now. We have rebuilt a new team, we have Jack Wilshere back and hopefully we can go from strength to strength,” said the Arsenal manager ahead of this match. Arsenal will now be having two straight home matches in the Premier league.

The Deschamps saga continues

Even though Didier Deschamps has only been France’s manager for a short period of time, it would be fair to say that he has already trodden on a few toes in the Premier League. One of those people who he has hit out is Arsene Wenger although his compatriot appears to have taken his recent comments relatively lightly and has said there is no problem between the two.

Wenger was reportedly furious when France decided to select Abou Diaby for two World Cup qualifiers last month and with the midfielder renowned as someone who struggles for fitness, it was no surprise when he broke down with a thigh injury in the game against Chelsea immediately after. The Gunners’ boss had supposedly asked France not to play Diaby in those games, in a bid to preserve his fitness following a lengthy layoff. However, when Deschamps got wind of such comments he was quick to put Wenger straight in his place and said that he was the one to decide who played for France.

As you would expect, the press have immediately asked Wenger’s response to such comments. Surprisingly, the 62-year-old has remained quite composed about the situation and claims that he does not have a problem with Deschamps. He said, “I have no problem with Didier Deschamps. It was not even my opinion. It was the opinion of my medical staff that Diaby was not in the position to cope with playing for both Arsenal and France at the moment because when you have been out for a year you have been out for a year. I have spoken to him and told him that.”

Wenger will now be hoping that Diaby returns to the Gunners’ reckoning after the international break and adds to the six appearances he has already made this term.

EXPECT IMPROVEMENTS

The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told Arsenal FC News that he expects improvements within the strikers at the club in the next few matches. Arsene Wenger decided to sell the star striker Robin van Persie for £ 24 million and brought in two players in the form of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud for the same amount of money. However, the new look strike force has not been able to make the necessary impact in the opening two matches of the season for Arsenal. Arsenal have opened the new season with two 0-0 draws against Sunderland and Stoke city. This has put them in a disadvantage for the Premier league title race even before it has begun.

However, the manager has expressed his confidence that his strikeforce will start finding the back of the net sooner rather than later. He has said that it is a matter of finding the right formation and personnel to go with the formation in order to get the best out of the two strikers. Wenger has praised the attitude of the midfielder Santi Cazorla, who arrived for around £ 15 million. The Spaniard has been the only bright star for Arsenal in these two matches, as he has created a lot of opportunities for the strikers.

“Offensively we still have some work to do because we missed a bit of accuracy in the final third in our movement and in our passing. We are used to finding each other in the final third and there’s something missing but I still think we should have won the game 1-0. You have to give credit to Stoke. They defended well and have experience at the back and are a very strong team defensively,” said after the 0-0 draw with Stoke city during the weekend, which was the second consecutive goalless draw for Arsenal.

RVP HEADING TO UNITED

The manager of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, has confirmed that the club is going to sign Robin Van Persie in a few days. Persie would have to pass the medical test and after that, the deal would be finalized.  Persie had captained Arsenal in the previous season. His own performance was also brilliant in the last season and he scored a total of 37 goals for Arsenal. But after the Euro Cup 2012, Persie had shocked everyone by announcing that he doesn’t want to continue playing for Arsenal. No one had expected Persie to leave the club all of a sudden. According to the reports, Persie didn’t have a good tuning with Arsene Wenger, the manager of the club. This is the main reason behind Persie’s decision of leaving the club.

Persie had been playing for Arsenal since the last 8 years. He joined Arsenal way back in 2004. Persie played his first match for Arsenal against Manchester United in a match of the FA Community Shield. When Persie joined the club, he was a left winger. But, Arsene Wenger converted him into a striker. After the exit of Cesc Fabregas from the club, Persie was appointed as the captain of the team in the last season. Persie led the team from the front and the last season was the most successful season of his career. Persie scored 132 goals for Arsenal in 8 seasons.

Apart from Manchester United, some other big clubs like Juventus and Manchester City had also shown interest in the Dutch striker, but, Manchester United won the race at the end. Alex Ferguson said that Persie is a great player and he is at the peak of his career at the moment. He is a very good buy for the club.
